The stretch of Abruzzo’s coastline between Vasto and Ortona is one of Italy’s hidden gems, known as the Costa dei Trabocchi. This enchanting area takes its name from the traditional wooden fishing structures, trabocchi, which are unique to this region. Suspended over the Adriatic Sea and connected to the shore by narrow wooden walkways, these trabocchi were historically used by fishermen to catch fish without venturing out into the open sea. Today, many of them have been lovingly restored and transformed into restaurants, offering visitors the chance to savour fresh seafood while enjoying breathtaking sea views.

Vasto

Vasto, at the southern end of the Costa dei Trabocchi, is a picturesque town steeped in history. Its historic centre is a maze of narrow streets, charming piazzas, and historic buildings like the Castello Caldoresco and the Palazzo d’Avalos, which houses a museum and art gallery. Vasto also boasts a stunning coastline, with long sandy beaches like Vasto Marina and the pristine Punta Penna, a part of the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve. This reserve is a haven for nature lovers, with walking and cycling paths offering panoramic views of the sea and surrounding countryside.

Costa dei Trabocchi

The Costa dei Trabocchi itself is a blend of unspoiled nature, cultural heritage, and culinary tradition. Stretching for about 70 kilometres, it features rocky coves, sandy beaches, and rolling hills that tumble down to the sea. Highlights along the coast include:

•Punta Aderci Nature Reserve: A stunning area of protected coastline near Vasto, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and relaxing in nature.

•Trabocco Turchino: Near San Vito Chietino, this trabocco was famously described by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio in his works.

•Via Verde: A scenic cycle and pedestrian path that runs along the old railway line, offering breathtaking views of the trabocchi and the Adriatic Sea.

Experience

Living in this part of Abruzzo means immersing yourself in the slow rhythms of life by the sea. Enjoy a leisurely lunch on a trabocco, where the fresh catch of the day is transformed into local dishes such as brodetto alla vastese, a traditional fish soup. Explore the ancient villages perched on the cliffs, cycle along the Via Verde, or simply relax on one of the quiet beaches.

The Costa dei Trabocchi is a place where tradition meets natural beauty, creating an unforgettable life experience.

Pescara

Pescara is the largest city in Abruzzo and a dynamic hub on the Adriatic coast. It combines a modern urban feel with a rich cultural heritage, being the birthplace of poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. Visitors can explore his historic home, now a museum, or enjoy Pescara’s vibrant marina, long sandy beaches, and lively nightlife. The city is a gateway to Abruzzo’s mountains and countryside while offering a cosmopolitan flair.

Links to Rome

Abruzzo is exceptionally well-connected to Rome, making it a favourite getaway for both Italians and visitors. The Autostrada A24/A25, also known as the “Autostrada dei Parchi,” links Rome to Pescara and other towns in the region. This scenic drive, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, passes through stunning mountain landscapes with bridges and tunnels that cut through the Apennines. Regular train and coach services also provide a reliable connection between Abruzzo and the Italian capital.

Links to Naples

While the route from Naples to Abruzzo is less direct, it is still accessible via the A1 motorway and regional roads, with a drive time of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. There are also bus services connecting Naples to Pescara and other Abruzzo towns, although they run less frequently than those to Rome.

Links to Croatia

Pescara serves as an important maritime link to Croatia, with seasonal ferries operating during the summer months to destinations such as Split, Zadar, and the islands of Hvar. These connections make Abruzzo a convenient starting point for travellers wishing to explore both Italy and the Croatian coast. The Adriatic shoreline is dotted with other ports offering further ferry links to Croatia, enhancing its accessibility to the Balkans.

Abruzzo’s location, nestled between Rome, Naples, and the Adriatic, makes it an ideal destination for exploring Italy’s diverse regions, as well as venturing further afield to Croatia and beyond. Its unique blend of mountain and coastal scenery, combined with excellent transport links, ensures it offers something for every type of traveller.

“Every time I return to Vasto, I can’t help but walk through the historic centre until I reach the belvedere. From there, looking out at the coastline stretching all the way to San Salvo truly makes me feel at home.”
